Possible Futures for Music

"Fresher Recordings"

One of the advantages of a live performance compared with a recording is that the live performance is subtly different each time it is performed. It has a freshness and power that is lacking in a stale recording.

However technology could perhaps be harnessed to improve the experience of listening to recorded music. Four or more different performances of the same song could be recorded. The media device would then play all four versions simultaneously but each version with a randomly modulated volume and bass etc. Every time the recording was played it would sound subtly different to the listener.

As an alternative to recording four different performances, which may be a cumbersome practice, multiple but different recordings of the same performance could be taken. By "different" recordings I mean the performance being recorded from different distances and with an emphasis on different frequency ranges etc.
