The Duty of Self Defence
#1
I believe that it is a duty to improve our self defence. We should empower ourselves to protect ourselves and others. Some people repress the natural warrior archetype within. This disrespect to a natural aspect of themselves can then attract troubles from the outside as  Nature tries to wake them up and restore balance.
If trouble does come it is too late to start training ie during the incident. So common sense says to improve self defence in peaceful times so that we are prepared for emergencies.
This applies to our children also. Just as we would teach them the rules of the road before letting them cross roads etc on their own and just as we would teach them to swim before letting them go into the sea so we have a duty to teach them self defence before they encounter people who may be violent.
The recommendation is to enroll yourself and children into a self defence class, karate, boxing or other martial art. It is worthwhile getting experience with such professionals. Also through study and practice within your own home. Be curious and methodical. I mean study defence ie evasion, blocking and defcection. Also get familar with using different parts of your body as striking surfaces. Learn some grappling and so on. Study and practice on your own as well as sparing etc with the guidance of professionals. We should also study the martial principles and tactics such as in the Art of War and the 36 Stratagems for example. So train the mind as well as the body.
By boosting your skills your confidence will increase. Your body language will then deter some bullies who often pick on weaker less confident people.
What about those who are against any kind of violence even if it is for self defence or to save another?
I believe that is a misunderstanding. Everyone has the right and duty to defend themselves and others. If the person is very stubborn though and refuse to increase their proper defence they can still at least improve their tactical awareness, evasion and deflection skills. Those are not violence.

If they really want to avoid any kind of defence because they feel it polutes their spirituality then they should consider the words of Sri Ramana:

The actions of the hands for example which naturally defend you without misguided interference do not disturb or stain the true pure nature within.

In general though not improving one's defence is usually caused by laziness, lack of confidence, lack of duty, cowardice and lack of compassion for others etc These character flaws call all be resolved. It is better to increase defence now guided by duty and common sense rather than been spurred on in the future by trouble and tragedy.

Do you believe that it is a duty to increase self defence?
