A Commentary on the 1008 Virtue MeditationsThe 1008 Virtue Meditations, because it constantly changes, holds the attention. Whilst most people find it extremely difficult to concentrate for an hour, or even half an hour, everyone can concentrate for a few seconds.
All one has to do is to concentrate for a few seconds, repeat a phrase, briefly generate a feeling or "flash visualize" a positive image etc. Then, before the mind wanders, a fresh instruction appears before you, again attracting and engaging the attention. By this method the attention may be focused on a variety of beneficial and healing ideas for a long period of time with out the need for strain or great powers of concentration.
Every brief flash of positive concentration is beneficial on it's own and supports and deepens the next flash. If you feel a closeness to or feel that there is special value for you in a particular meditation then remember it and focus on it for as many days as you feel appropriate.
The 1008 Virtue Meditations are comprised of every permutation between a list of 42 Virtues and 24 "activities" (ie: 42*24=1008).
It is not claimed that the numbers are particularily significant in relation to the meditations. It is however theorized that there are significant numbers that define idealized versions. For example on a particular level of conceptual complexity we beleive that there is a definite and exact number of virtues. So to have less in the list means that we have missed some out-our list lacks completion. On the other hand if our list contains more than the non-arbitary number then it means that our list may be over complex/confusing. So to discover that number is important and is a step towards the deepest understanding of the Virtues and thus our own nature.
